life as i know it, music, portraits

portrait of jessica hopper

I had the honor of meeting and photographing the music writer and senior editor of Pitchfork back in March for the June issue of Bust Magazine – pick it up on newsstands now!  I saw her read from her new book The First Collection of Criticism by a Female Rock Critic in Greenpoint tonight.  It’s an amazing collection of writing the delves much further beyond music and into culture at large. She’s charming, witty, and down-to-earth – it was great to work with you Jessica!

2 much love

I tried to photograph everyone that came out to my birthday party last week.  I adore each one of these people…even more for coming out on a rainy Monday night to celebrate with me.  Thanks for celebrating with me. Let’s keep being awesome together.

things are what they are

…and a rose is a rose is a rose.

This is Nick at the 10th Bike Kill, the Black Label Bike Club’s annual street party. I spent several years, mostly between 2004 and 2008 photographing Black Label. I missed the last few Bike Kills because I was traveling in another place that holds my passion, New Orleans. It was great to be back and see that it’s still as dirty and rowdy as ever, with a few extra flourishes.

Witching with Callie

I’ve been working on a story for Bust Magazine about a friend of mine and her discovery of witchcraft. Callie has spent the last several months focused on the Wiccan tradition. I spent some time with her this summer participating in rituals and learning with her. It’s not all magic and evil spells, but a way to celebrate the earth and the sky, and our connection to it.

Look for Callie’s great article with more of my images in the issue on newsstands!
