sleeping waters

Early French settlers called bayous “sleeping waters” because of their lack of visible movement – however they do flow, albeit sluggishly, in different directions depending on the tides, rainfall, and wind.  Jean Lafitte Park, in the town of Gretna, Lousiana is located about 30 minutes south of New Orleans.  The Louisiana wetlands are disappearing – literally sinking – at an astonishing rate equivalent to 33 football fields a day, leaving the coastal cities of the state even more vulnerable to hurricanes.  So look at these photos, cuz this place won’t be around for long.
